I chose to interpret the film The Hours by Stephen Daldry because it has been with me for many years. The movie is inspired by Virginia Woolf's iconic novel Mrs. Dalloway, which follows a woman's life over the course of 24 hours. The story revolves around the trajectories of three parallel women, portrayed by Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman, and Meryl Streep, at the peak of their craft. The film explores the disillusionment, hopes, and ghosts of the protagonists, as if each one were the other, diving into different timelines. Their destinies ultimately converge in a literary apotheosis, where we encounter the three figures of creation: the writer, the reader, and the character.
I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the film through a series of contemplative paintings that blend fiction with floral compositions, which I created with photographer Anna Leroy. I evoke the melancholic character of Julianne Moore, with the flowers symbolizing the pain of living, the taste of words, and the difficulty of being a woman, lover, and mother. It is a beautiful meditation on the passage of time, love, and death, told through the story of a day in the lives of three powerful women.
